The Met Ball 2008

This past Monday I had the honor of attending the Met Ball in NY and let's just say...it changed my life!
What with Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld, Mario Testino, the Beckhams, Tom and Katie, every known designer, Beyonce, JLO, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, the Gossip Girl boys, and 700 more... whose wouldn't?
So it all started about two weeks ago in the Vogue fashion closet in LA (enough said- it's where all the magic happens) when I went in for a fitting for my gown. I tried on about 6 different dresses and found three that I loved. I had my eye on one of them, secretly hoping that it would be chosen for me. After all, when it came down to the decision making it was all in the hands of Amy Astley (Teen Vogue editor in chief) and Anna Wintour (need I say more?) SO... I was extremely happy to find out that they both had picked THE same dress I loved. I flew out to NY Sat and once that plane hit the ground, I was on. The energy of NY kept me going at full speed the entire weekend and into Monday. I was so excited for the day to arrive and when it finally did, I was so ready. After a nice relaxing morning (had lunch at a cute lil place called VYNL with some family) I had to get back for hair and make-up. With all that hard work out of the way, I had to quickly slip the fabulous Oscar De La Renta dress on, fix the corset in the back, slip the heels on, stuff my tiny purse, and check the jewelry. Once I double checked in the mirror, some friends clicked some photos (I need to remember this day!) and I went downstairs to jump (as gracefully as possible) in the car. My heart was pounding! The car ride felt like forever and I couldn't wait to get out and get up those huge red stairs with camera lights flashing every which way and screaming voices distracting me. As we approached I became more and more anxious and finally, I had to step out and do my thing (typical... the car door was so heavy and as I opened it, it swung out and hit someone. Luckily not too hard but uhh so awkward ha). I met my publicist at the bottom of those daunting stairs and luckily Ed Westwick (Chuck from Gossip Girls) is also a client of hers and arrived at the same time as I did so I had someone to go through the mayhem with. My friend from Teen Vogue came down to escort us both and off we went. Photo after photo, I almost went blind from all the lights. Finally I made it to the top and went in. Ahhh I couldn't believe I was finally there! The evening was super heroes themed so the exhibit was based on how costumes from super heroes films portrayed different forms of the human body and related to specific designers' collections. I walked through with Ed and on to the reception inside the statue gallery. It was so surreal being in the Met Museum while taking part in this insane evening. Ed and I chatted for a long time as we people-watched. Then Chace Crawford (Nate from GG) showed up along with a huge flow of guests and the night suddenly got started. People were flowing from everywhere and every time I turned my head, I recognized someone new. Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Amanda Peet, Mischa Barton, Camille Belle, Lake Bell, Eva Amurri, Jamie Bell, Emmy Rossum, the Olsen Twins with Christian Louboutin (he remembered me from the lunch we had with Lisa Love), Janet Jackson with her beau Jermaine Dupris, David and Victoria Beckham, David Bowie and Iman, Beyonce... I couldn't believe it! Caught up in awe I almost didn't hear the trumpeters calling everyone to dinner (yes old fashioned trumpeters sounded their horns to alert everyone that we should make our way into the Egyptian ruins for dinner)! I kept forgeting that we were in the actual museum and as we walked through all the galleries to reach the main room, we passed all the displays of ancient historical artifacts. It was absolutely surreal. We reached the main room and as I stepped into it, I couldn't believe my eyes. It looked just like the lair of a super hero- There were small lights that looked like stars everywhere and huge broken pieces of what looked like glaciers or ice cascaded everywhere. Long tables and candles adorned the room and it was honestly the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I was at the Teen Vogue table sitting between designers Philip Lim and Matthew Williamson and across from me was Zoe Kravitz, Chace Crawford, Olivia Wilde, and Zach Gilford (Matt Saracen from Friday Night Lights). A few seats down from me was Amy Astley, Kristin Davis (Charlotte from Sex and the City), Ed Westwick, model Chanel Iman, and Michael Kors. Dinner stayed in the super hero theme and we had pasta with caviar (a la spiderman) and dessert decorated with hero emblems. After dinner AIR performed and even did a musical number where they danced on a table! Everyone got really into it and had a great time. Later it was time to mingle and I spoke to all sorts of people including Mario Testino who had his famous camera around his neck to capture those spontaneous moments and I even went up to Karl Lagerfeld! I though why not, I mean how often am I in the same room as him, NEVER! I introduced myself and said that I had worn his gown to the Crillon Debutante Ball in Paris this past November and he actually knew who I was. He remembered the photos from the Ball and he even gave me kisses on the cheek! Ahh I couldn't believe it!! The rest of the evening was quite a blur -I was just so in awe and honored to be a part of it all. The after-party was so much fun- we danced with Chanel Iman, Zach Posen, Philip Lim, Mischa Barton... and all in all literally had a ball. I will never ever forget that night. I can't wait to go again!

Sounds awesome, really! You looked great, and I can't imagine being in the same room with all those people at the same time... AMAZING. I was just watching Gossip Girl, and thinking of being with Chace Crawford... haha freaks me out.

Keep as great as you are Lily!

That was so refreshing to read.. (blog: march 27th).. I believe it to be completely true.. I make sure to keep an active conversation going with my folks. It's amazing how easy it is to bridge that 'huge-little' gap between our generations if you genuinely take the time to try..

I've had a few different occasions where friends and I would end up discussing how our current 'day-in-age' lacks true role models.. Who do we admire these days? Just got me thinking for awhile..

You have such a wonderful soul, Lily. This is an amazing idea and my hope is that everyone will realize what a gift this blog really is.. You have created a safe and intelligent environment for any generation to speak its truthful mind.. And that, IS worth writing for..

Lily Collins is studying broadcast journalism at USC, is set to appear in interstitial programming spots airing throughout the day and night on Nickelodeon, reporting from the sets of Nick series, movie premieres, awards shows, concerts and other celebrity events. She also will host daily 30-second updates centered on current music, movie, fashion and celebrity news and join current host J Boogie to contribute reports to the weekend TEENick block.

This marks the first time that Nickelodeon has inked a deal for a roving entertainment correspondent.

"Lily is a natural in front of the camera," Nickelodeon executive vp talent Paula Kaplan said. "She can think on her feet and is comfortable interviewing a wide range of people. As a rising young star herself, she's totally plugged into the latest entertainment and pop culture trends."
