Mothers Day Vintage Shopping Trip
Yesterday for Mothers Day my mom and I went to the Vintage Clothing Show at the Civic Center. Shopping together I realized that those items I see and cringe at were once completely in style and yes, my mom wore them...

First off, I love my mom more than anything. She's my best friend and we have the greatest time together. Antique fairs and vintage shopping are two of our favorite things to do so naturally, the perfect way to spend Mothers Day was to go to the Civil Center's Vintage clothing show. I absolutely love rummaging through racks and bins in search of one-of-a-kind pieces that no one else would have bothered to go hunting for. My mom, Jill, has a great eye and knows so much about all the early designers. She always gives me her honest (although our tastes clash sometimes) opinions and advice when we're wandering together. The show wasn't too big but it was still quite overwhelming. There were so many clothes packed into small spaces that I couldn't help but get confused on where to even start looking. My mom and I adore vintage dress with high waists and feminine forms. We both agree that unless we absolutely love something, we shouldn't just buy it for the sake of buying. Uh we have both learned that the hard way- there is no point in over buying because then our unique pieces are no longer as special. It's funny how, as we wandered, my eye would catch an item and I'd just be about to tell my mom about it when she would ask me if I had seen this piece and they'd be the same thing. You wouldn't necessarily think that we had similar tastes but having grown up with someone as fashion saavy as my mom, I have acquired a certain taste and now it's more apparent than ever that I am so much like my mom! Some may say "ah no don't say that!" but I happen to like the fact that I'm becoming more like her in some ways, not all but I'll admit some. Now, although vintage clothes are gorgeously made and delicately designed, there are some pieces that A. I just don't understand, B. are so hideous that I don't ever know how someone could have worn it, and C. I figure were made with Halloween in mind. Coming across a pair of platforms (need I say more?) all of the above sprang into my mind. Of course, mom then says, "ahh I used to wear those when I was your age." Excuse me?! Haha gotta love my mom. I look at them and I look at her and surprisingly I can see where that could be possible. She is extremely funky and definitely willing to take fashion risks. She always seems to pull them off too, mind you this look was from a time when platforms really were "In," not to age her or anything. Just the truth. If I wore these today, well I wouldn't be caught dead in them but if I did, it would most certainly be for a costume. Later, we found cute vintage sweaters (those seem to be quite timeless and fit for any age) and a beautiful dress. Vintage dresses don't compare to modern ones. They were just made with such care and attention to detail of a woman's shape. This one looked sailor inspired and the material draped perfectly around the neck. All in all, mom ended up with a high-waisted belt with instruments on it (really fun and definitely would look great adorning a simple high-waisted dress) and I left with a really fun bug pin to put on a sweater. No much but then again, if we had bought everything we saw that we liked, we would have no closet space left. It was such a fun day and I always feel like I learn a little bit more about my mom when we go vintage shopping. After all, we're looking at a lot of pieces she remembers from her childhood of what her mom wore and what she herself wore growing up. It's just funny to me that now I wear some, and I stress some, of the things she used to like because those fashions have come around again. Vintage will never go out of style just like hanging out with my mom will never get old- even if she does ;)

Check out the clips from our day of shopping that I posted... see shopping with mom CAN be fun!

That was so refreshing to read.. (blog: march 27th).. I believe it to be completely true.. I make sure to keep an active conversation going with my folks. It's amazing how easy it is to bridge that 'huge-little' gap between our generations if you genuinely take the time to try..

I've had a few different occasions where friends and I would end up discussing how our current 'day-in-age' lacks true role models.. Who do we admire these days? Just got me thinking for awhile..

You have such a wonderful soul, Lily. This is an amazing idea and my hope is that everyone will realize what a gift this blog really is.. You have created a safe and intelligent environment for any generation to speak its truthful mind.. And that, IS worth writing for..

Lily Collins is studying broadcast journalism at USC, is set to appear in interstitial programming spots airing throughout the day and night on Nickelodeon, reporting from the sets of Nick series, movie premieres, awards shows, concerts and other celebrity events. She also will host daily 30-second updates centered on current music, movie, fashion and celebrity news and join current host J Boogie to contribute reports to the weekend TEENick block.

This marks the first time that Nickelodeon has inked a deal for a roving entertainment correspondent.

"Lily is a natural in front of the camera," Nickelodeon executive vp talent Paula Kaplan said. "She can think on her feet and is comfortable interviewing a wide range of people. As a rising young star herself, she's totally plugged into the latest entertainment and pop culture trends."
