Last night my mom and I arrived in Madrid! I'm doing 6 fashion shows in one day on Friday and today I was fitted for them all...
We arrived late last night to this amazing city of nightlife. Seriously, we couldn't sleep because people were still partying outside our balconies at 4 in the morning. Needless to say we were definitely tired when we woke up this morning. I had to get up and out to IFEMA (the convention center where the fashion shows were being held) to be fitted for the event. With my mom's hairdryer blowing out and smoke sizzling and me locking myself out of my room (in pajamas with a toothbrush in my hand- I was helping with the hairdryer incident) it was all quite a struggle. Finally, we reached the center and I was handed my list of designers and fittings that I had to complete. Hmm apparently I was to be modeling bridal gowns. Now, I know that it sounds strange that I'm wearing wedding gowns but hey, in Europe they get married slightly younger and a lot of the models were my age (well they appeared to be at least). The pieces I am wearing are absolutely gorgeous and so delicately made. One designer, Jorge Terra, even designed the dress on me, as he added butterflies to it while I was being fitted. What I was surprised about were the other models. Madrid is known as the city that demands its models be weighed before fashion week in order to promote a healthier body image. I was actually pleasantly surprised to see that a lot of the girls had curvier bodies than the girls I normally see at the shows in the states. They looked healthier and more toned. In fact, the girl in most demand was the one with the most feminine body and most of the designers were complaining about the group of those they considered "too thin." That was absolutely shocking to me because I assumed that Europe would be worse than the US but in fact, it seemed more regulated. It was so refreshing to see girls of all shapes, every one looking beautiful in their gowns.
After a couple of hours of fittings, mom and I headed back to the center of town (after we came across these weird gummy bear-like statues) and decided to walk around the city seeing what we could find. Umm well we found a lot of the same stores on the Grand Via but at least we were out and about. But, we were so tired and decided that a night in the hotel for dinner sounded more appealing than resorting to tapas and snacks at dinnertime (it was almost 8 and nothing was open to eat because here, everything opens at 9). Room service and the ideal view of the plaza= perfection! Plus, it stayed light here until 9:30pm! It felt like 4 or 5 and definitely not time to go to bed, so we went to the gym- crazy but it was either that or try to go to sleep early which was impossible seeing as though the plaza was just filling with people going to dinner and that meant lots of noise. Anyway, it was all in all a great 1st day in Madrid and tomorrow we're off to the Prado Museum. Will let you know what it's like and how day two of our trip goes...
- check out these weird gummy bear statues. Talk about needing a tan on that last one...

Hi Lily! OMG! I was almost in tears--clutching my invisible pearls--as I read your blog posting about our day in lovely Fullerton. Let me now praise you: You are by far, not only, one of the prettiest girls I have ever worked with, but so professional! I loved every minute of it. You were sweet, gracious, classy and intelligent. The "quadruple threat"! The cherry on the cake was our conversation about Chanel and how much you knew about the art of Haute Couture--there are fashion design students about to graduate that don't even know half as much as you (and I should know, I teach them!). I really hope we get to work again--or at least, have you come by my studio and play Dress Up!!! A big kiss and hugs, with much admiration, Nick
hey lily, congrats on everything your doing , you look really beautiful, a little different from the 6 year old girl i used to know take care tommy xxxx
Hey Lilly , I was that girl @ Joeseph Martin today , that u complimented on my hair. i think you are a very well rounded person. I was to shy of telling you. BTW c u again @ the salon!
That was so refreshing to read.. (blog: march 27th).. I believe it to be completely true.. I make sure to keep an active conversation going with my folks. It's amazing how easy it is to bridge that 'huge-little' gap between our generations if you genuinely take the time to try..
I've had a few different occasions where friends and I would end up discussing how our current 'day-in-age' lacks true role models.. Who do we admire these days? Just got me thinking for awhile..
You have such a wonderful soul, Lily. This is an amazing idea and my hope is that everyone will realize what a gift this blog really is.. You have created a safe and intelligent environment for any generation to speak its truthful mind.. And that, IS worth writing for..
